Nurse Assistant Training Program or Home Health Aide 
What you need to do
  1. Age
    Must be at least 16 years old.  

  2. Training Program
    Complete a CDPH‑approved Nurse Assistant Training Program (NATP). CDPH+2Health Workforce Initiative+2

    • Minimum 60 classroom (theory) hours.  

    • Minimum 100 clinical hours of supervised hands‑on practice. CDPH+2Health Workforce Initiative+2

    • The training must include the required modules, laboratories, skills, theory, clinical settings etc. 

  3. Health & Background Requirements

    • A physical examination and medical history showing you're free from conditions that might create risk. TB (tuberculin) test or x‑ray if needed. CDPH+2CNEI+2

    • Live Scan fingerprinting background check (criminal record clearance).  

  4. Application & Exam

    • Submit the initial application (CDPH 283B) and the Live Scan form (BCIA 8016) prior to or during enrollment.  

    • Pass a competency evaluation exam (written and skills portion) after your training is complete. CDPH+1

  5. Certificate Issuance
    Once you pass the exam and all documentation (health, background, training) are approved, CDPH issues your CNA certificate. CDPH+1

  6. Renewal / Continuing Education

    • To renew, you must complete 48 hours of in‑service training or Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every 2 years.  

    • Minimum of 12 hours per year of those. CDPH


Home Health Aide (HHA)
What you need to do
There are a few paths depending on how much training you take, but the basics are:
  1. Prerequisites
    • Be at least 16 years old. CDPH

    • For 40‑hour HHA training: You must already hold an active CNA certificate. CDPH+1

    • Criminal record clearance is required. CDPH

  2. Training Options
    • 40 Hour HHA Training Program:
      20 hours theory + 20 hours clinical. Only for those who are already CNAs. CDPH+2North Bay CNA+2

    • 120 Hour HHA Training Program:
      For those who may not have a CNA or want a more extensive training. This includes 120 total hours with a portion being classroom theory and a portion in clinical practice. CDPH

  3. Application & Forms
    • When enrolling, you need to submit the initial application 

    • If doing 120‑hour program, also require Live Scan 

  4. Renewal / Continuing Education
    • HHA certificates must be renewed; part of the renewal includes completing 24 hours of in‑service training or CEUs within the two‑year certification period. At least 12 of those hours in each year.
